Strengthening our multicultural communities

Community and migrant groups can now apply for grants of up to $200,000 as part of the State Government's $12 million investment in multicultural communities.

Multicultural Affairs Minister Zoe Bettison says the new Stronger Families, Stronger Communities program is a direct result of the trebling of multicultural funding announced in this year's State Budget.

"These new grants demonstrate our commitment to supporting a new era of multiculturalism which is centred on valuing diversity and strengthening social cohesion," Ms Bettison said.

"Under this particular funding stream, up to $200,000 will be provided for initiatives that address the priority needs of our culturally diverse communities.

"While existing multicultural grants programs have traditionally supported culturally diverse community projects, activities and festivals, these new grants will address social issues.

"These include the impacts of an ageing population, women's safety and disadvantage."

Ms Bettison says immigration has enriched our cultural life and greatly improved our prosperity in our state and we want all South Australians to share in the benefits of our cultural diversity.

"We continue to need strong, safe and caring communities that provide good training and employment opportunities and a sense of equity and belonging.

"These grants will ensure that our new and diverse cultural communities are well supported and have access to opportunities to achieve these goals."

Aside from the Stronger Families, Stronger Communities grants, the increased funding will go toward updating infrastructure and increasing participation in cultural festivals.

"This record investment in multiculturalism means we will be able to upgrade ageing infrastructure," she said.

"We will also bring smaller festivals into the mainstream by supporting food hygiene and OHS compliance, and providing expanded marketing opportunities."

An information session about the new grants will be held on Wednesday, 23 September 2015. Applications for the Stronger Families, Stronger Communications Grants will close on Monday 12 October 2015. For more information visit
