Free entry for 500 young people at Camp Gallipoli
The State Government is offering 500 young South Australians the chance to connect with the spirit of the Anzac at Camp Gallipoli at the Adelaide Showgrounds on 24-25 April.
Youth Minister Zoe Bettison said the Government will pay for up to 500 admissions for 12-25 year-olds at the overnight event that is expected to see more than 6000 people celebrate Anzac Day.
Young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, as well as those from multicultural and Indigenous communities will be prioritised.
"I particularly encourage young people who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to apply," Ms Bettison said.
"All young people in South Australia can benefit enormously from connecting with the Anzac legacy.
"Camp Gallipoli brings young people and families together to immerse themselves in a modern experience commemorating Australia's involvement in World War I.
"It is a wonderful opportunity for our young people to foster a deeper understanding of their heritage and the spirit of mateship," Ms Bettison said.
Camp Gallipoli is a national initiative celebrated around Australia and New Zealand on Anzac Day.
RSL President, Brigadier Tim Hanna, said the event includes young people camping out for two days and one night, attending a dawn service, participating in an Anzac flame ceremony, and engaging in learning experiences focusing on Australia's proud Anzac heritage.
"Participants will receive free entry to the event and will also become members of the Camp Gallipoli Club, giving them 12 months' access to a World War I and Gallipoli online databases, the RSL's online genealogical resources and a subscription to the club's newsletter," Brigadier Hanna said.
"They must bring their own bedding (sleeping bags, pillows, foam mattresses), and can either bring their own food or purchase food at the event."
Children under 15 years must be supervised by a responsible adult who, if aged over 25 years, will need to purchase a ticket from the Camp Gallipoli website.
To participate in this unique opportunity, email firstname.lastname@example.org and quote 'Office for Youth'. Applications close at 5pm on 23 April 2016, unless tickets sell out earlier.
