Housing SA launches blueprint for the future

Housing SA has unveiled its blueprint for the next five years, with an increased focus on ensuring tenants have access to the supports they need to engage with their communities.

Minister for Social Housing Tony Piccolo said the five-year blueprint included a new vision for the organisation called 'Connecting People to Place'.

"Having a place to call home is vitally important for everyone and now, right around Australia, the face of public housing is changing," he said.

"Over the past two decades, the focus of public housing has shifted from providing housing for key workers to providing homes for people who are vulnerable or excluded from home ownership or the private rental market.

"Housing SA is no longer just a property owner and a landlord – we now have a more significant role to play in the delivery of services and the development of more public and social housing.

"This vision is about recognising that shift, and ensuring those people who live in Housing SA properties right around the state have access to high quality, well-coordinated services.

"This might include connecting people with their local TAFE, so they have the education and skills they need to find work, or helping their children access a local playgroup."

Mr Piccolo said the Blueprint outlines the principles and values that will define Housing SA.

"This is an important step forward in addressing the needs of some of our most disadvantaged citizens," he said.

Some of the key changes outlined in the Blueprint include:

  • Building stronger links with NGOs, government and private organisations to deliver new housing and better support the needs of tenants;
  • Ensuring services across regions are more co-ordinated, and that tenants are more involved in local decision-making that has an impact on them; and
  • supporting the role of community housing as a strong contributor to social housing and service provision – providing a number of options for people seeking housing.
