Thanks to South Australia’s volunteers

2018-12-05

Volunteering SA&NT. #ThankYou. #SAVolunteer. #IVD2018. #ResilientCommunities

We’re shining a light on the 906,000 South Australians who volunteer their time to the community for the United Nations International Volunteer Day (IVD), celebrated annually on 5 December.

The state boasts one of the highest volunteer rates in Australia, boosted further by the recent removal of all fees associated with volunteer screening clearances.

The efforts of South Australian volunteers contribute to an estimated 1.73 million volunteer hours per week, with the activity providing benefits to many people.

IVD is a great opportunity to thank volunteers and to recognise the significant contribution they make to the economic and social wellbeing of our communities. If you know an amazing volunteer, or you are one, don’t forget to share a photo on social media and #ThankSAVols!

Volunteer clearance checks are free

On 1 November this year, fees were removed for volunteer clearance checks, recognising the important contribution of volunteers and making it easier for people to volunteer.

Volunteering app

South Australians considering volunteering can download the free ‘WeDo’ app to find specific volunteering opportunities in SA.

The app is the first volunteering app of its kind in the world, with hundreds of volunteer opportunities available on the app at any time. It was a joint SA Government and Volunteering SA&NT initiative that has seen more than 3,500 people download it — connecting volunteers to those organisations in need in a matter of minutes.

The ‘WeDo’ app is available via the iTunes App Store, or on Google Play.

In 2018, International Volunteer Day is themed “Volunteers build resilient communities”, with a special focus on local community volunteers who contribute to making their communities more resilient. Find out more on the United Nations website.
