Additional assistance for South Australian communities in response to the Sampson Flat bushfire in January

Commonwealth Minister for Justice Michael Keenan and South Australian Minister for Communities and Social Inclusion Zoe Bettison today announced additional recovery assistance for bushfire affected communities following the Sampson Flat bushfire on 2 January 2015.

Mr Keenan said the Australian and South Australian governments will jointly fund a Community Recovery Fund under Category C of the Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).

"The NDRRA provides assistance under Category C for a Community Recovery Fund, designed to assist those communities with their medium to long-term recovery by providing funding for activities and projects aimed at restoring social networks and building community resilience," Mr Keenan said.

Ms Bettison said the bushfire caused enormous damage, not only to property, but also to the social fabric of the communities of Adelaide Hills, Playford and Tea Tree Gully.

"Under this Fund we will engage a Community Development Officer to assist with the work currently underway in assessing community needs, as well as identifying programmes and further initiatives to help get our communities back on their feet," Ms Bettison said.

The Australian and South Australian governments will continue to work together to ensure bushfire affected communities and their local councils receive the support and assistance they need to recover.
