Disability focus on programs for disadvantaged South Australians

Young people living with disability are the main focus of $970,000 worth of State Government grants aimed at strengthening and developing South Australian communities.

Communities and Social Inclusion Minister Zoe Bettison said 47 community organisations will share in the 53rd and latest round of the Community Benefit SA one-off grants program.

"These grants go to organisations that help to improve community participation, life management skills, well-being and quality of life for disadvantaged communities across South Australia," Ms Bettison said.

"In this latest round, the one-off grants range from $900 to $50,000 with several projects focusing on helping young people with disability to develop life skills and build strong connections with their community.

"Community Benefit SA focuses on community-strengthening projects with an emphasis on families and children, Aboriginal people, new arrivals, people with a disability and rural and remote communities."

Projects funded in the latest round of grants include:

  • Community Accommodation and Respite Services received $37,860 for the Kids in Action Program in Ingle Farm and Park Holme, and to expand the program to Oaklands Park, Mount Barker and Port Lincoln. The Project Officer will work to provide a quality respite program for 147 South Australian children and families
  • Cora Barclay Centre was awarded $8,490 to fund a three-day life skills camp for 25 hearing-impaired children
  • Interchange Inc. will receive $11,240 to establish a youth group for 40 young people with a disability. Support workers will provide mentoring, encourage peer interaction and improve self-confidence and community inclusion.

"I congratulate each of the successful grant recipients and look forward to seeing the significant, positive contributions these programs will make to our communities," she said.
