First meeting of Local Recovery Committee after Sampson Flat bushfire

The Local Recovery Committee, made up of representatives from local and state government, met yesterday to discuss recovery for the communities affected by the Sampson Flat bushfire.

The newly appointed Local Recovery Coordinator, Karlene Maywald, chaired the meeting.

"Our first priority is to bring together a group of community members to advise the committee on the most pressing issues to be addressed," Ms Maywald said.

"We anticipate that this Community Reference Group will include community leaders from the fire zone, representatives of organisations already working with the community, and other organisations identified by the local councils in the affected area.

The Community Reference Group will share information, identify priorities for action and help keep the Local Recovery Committee informed about work happening on the ground and any issues that emerge.

"The first action of the Community Reference Group will be to help ensure community meetings are well supported and reaching out to residents and to plan for additional meetings as required by affected communities.

"The Reference Group will also provide advice on connecting and communicating with those affected by the bushfire, including those who do not have internet access.

"We are looking forward to hearing directly from the community at the public meetings (dates to be set soon), to find out what sort of help people affected by the fires need right now and as they start rebuilding."

Yesterday's Local Recovery Committee meeting heard from the South Australia Police, the Country Fire Service, the affected local councils and relevant State Government agencies, including those responsible for emergency relief, roads, primary industries, health and the environment.

Information about the public meetings will be available on, when dates are available.
