Karlene Maywald appointed as Local Recovery Coordinator

Former South Australian Government Minister Karlene Maywald will lead the community rebuilding effort following the Sampson Flat bushfire.

Minister for Communities and Social Inclusion Zoe Bettison said Ms Maywald brings a wealth of experience to the Local Recovery Coordinator position.

"Karlene brings valuable skills and experience to this important role including having been one of the duty Ministers in the wake of the Eyre Peninsula fires a decade ago," Ms Bettison said.

"She will have lead responsibility for coordinating the State Government's recovery response, working closely with the local community and across the three tiers of government and the non-government sector to ensure that services are coordinated and responsive.

"The recovery phase is about helping people and communities get back on their feet, addressing community health and wellbeing as well as damage to infrastructure, the economy and environment."

Ms Maywald will be temporarily based at the Golden Grove Recreation Centre before a permanent base is established near the fire affected area.

A Local Recovery Committee will be established shortly. This committee will help ensure recovery activities reflect local priorities and needs and build strong partnerships between people affected by the fire.

Emergency Services Minister Tony Piccolo said he expected firefighting operations to continue in the coming weeks as the Sampson Flat fire area is monitored for hotspots and flare ups.

"I remind the public that there is still danger on the fire ground. Falling trees continue to pose a threat and crews will continue to work in the area," Mr Piccolo said.

"I also want to convey the Government's appreciation to everyone who worked on this this campaign – paid or volunteer, local or interstate."
