SA Aboriginal Women’s Gathering unites to share community experiences

The State Aboriginal Women's Gathering will meet in Mount Gambier today to share what is happening in their communities in a safe and supportive environment.

Minister for the Status of Women Gail Gago said Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women use these gatherings to learn from each other, share experiences and discuss issues for their communities.

"The Mount Gambier gathering is the last of three separate gatherings for 2014-2015, a new format which has made it easier for women in regional areas to participate," Ms Gago said.

"Delegates attending today's gathering will hear about a range of topics, including SA Health's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women's Screening Program and Murdoch Children's Research Institute's findings from the Aboriginal Families Study.

"Aboriginal women in the South East who were involved in that study will have an opportunity to hear about the research into the views and experiences of mothers having an Aboriginal baby in South Australia between July 2011 and June 2013."

"Previous gatherings in Port Augusta and Adelaide have been very successful, attracting 50 participants from across the state.

"We encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to attend the Mount Gambier gathering to benefit from the stories and experiences from their peers.

"The Government has worked closely with the delegate-elected State Aboriginal Women's Gathering Working Group to create stronger relationships between metropolitan and regional areas.

"It is important for gatherings to take place in regional areas so that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living outside of Adelaide have the opportunity to network and share their own community news.

"A State Aboriginal Women's Gathering LinkedIn Group for networking and sharing information about employment and skills has also been created," she said.
