Coordinator appointed to steer recovery effort for Cudlee Creek fire

2019-12-23

The State Government has appointed a Local Recovery Coordinator to support communities affected by the Cudlee Creek fire. Having a designated person to coordinate the recovery will help residents and local businesses get back on their feet.

Alex Zimmerman, a South Australian Police Officer, will begin work with the local community to understand their recovery needs and identify what additional assistance is required. Mr Zimmerman is familiar with the challenges of supporting a community in recovery, having served as Local Recovery Coordinator during the Pinery fire and the Virginia floods.

Affected communities

The Hills communities currently affected by the Cudlee Creek fire include:

  • Birdwood
  • Brukunga
  • Charleston
  • Cudlee Creek
  • Harrogate
  • Inverbrackie
  • Kenton Valley
  • Lenswood
  • Lobethal
  • Mount Torrens
  • Woodside.

At least 74 homes have been destroyed and many more damaged, along with hundreds of outbuildings and vehicles.

Relief centres established at Turramurra Recreation Centre, Highbury and Mt Barker High School will continue to operate into the new year.

Residents, schools, small businesses and primary producers will all have different recovery needs and the State Government will work hand in hand to support them all in the best way possible.

Financial assistance

South Australians directly affected by the Cudlee Creek fire may be eligible for both Personal Hardship grants of up to $700 and Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payments of up to $1000.
