Register with Telecross REDi phone service

2019-11-20

As South Australia experiences one of its hottest November days on record, vulnerable South Australians are being urged to register for a free, potentially life-saving phone service that provides welfare checks to the community during heatwaves.

The community can register themselves, loved ones and friends for the Red Cross Telecross REDi service, which calls clients at regular intervals to check-in on them when temperatures increase significantly.

The service is activated and funded by the Department of Human Services during very hot weather.

Last summer, the service was activated a total of 11 days, during which 5,797 calls were made to more than 700 registered vulnerable clients.

About Telecross REDi service

People registered with the Telecross REDi service receive a phone call up to three times a day, to check on how they are coping.

There are people in our community known to be at a far greater risk than others during the hot weather, so please consider how they can best prepare for the heat.

People at greater risk include:

  • those who live alone, or with a disability or mental illness
  • those who are housebound, frail, aged
  • someone recovering from an illness or accident.

The trained Red Cross volunteers provide tips to stay cool, or if necessary, activate an emergency procedure if required.

Register for the Telecross REDi service

Vulnerable people, or their representatives, can register for the Telecross REDi service.
