A Chance to Say Thanks a Million to our SA Volunteers

Volunteers Minister Tony Piccolo has thanked South Australia's 900,000 volunteers at the state launch of National Volunteers Week in Victoria Square this afternoon.

"Whether it is delivering meals, helping others in an emergency, patrolling our beaches, running our sporting clubs or supporting the needs of others, volunteers make a real difference to our lives and to the community in which we live," Mr Piccolo said.

Mr Piccolo said this year's theme, Thanks A Million, pays tribute to the effort and commitment of South Australian volunteers and he is encouraging everyone to thank them for their efforts.

"Volunteers should be recognised, valued and supported and National Volunteers Week provides an opportunity for all communities across Australia to recognise and thank volunteers for all that they do," he said.

"Each year South Australian volunteers provide services valued at almost $5 billion.

The work they do equates to about 107,000 jobs across the State.

"Recognising the work of volunteers is crucial and I encourage people to let them know that you appreciate them and the work they do."

Mr Piccolo said a recent survey found that volunteer participation in South Australia remains high.

"It showed that 45 per cent of South Australians volunteer formally with a local community organisation or group, providing an estimated 1.6 million volunteer hours per week. A further 51 per cent volunteer informally, for example helping an elderly neighbour with their grocery shopping," Mr Piccolo said.

"In total, this equates to a combined rate of 71 percent of the population. That's more than 900,000 individuals donating their time and energy in some way."

To assist our community organisations and clubs in acknowledging the contribution of their volunteers, the Office for Volunteers has offered a new recognition certificate program for this year's National Volunteers Week.

More than 5000 of signed Certificates have so far been distributed and a further 283 volunteers will receive the prestigious Premier's Certificate for Outstanding Volunteer Achievement.

Events organised for volunteers throughout the week include concerts, morning teas and movie days. For more information on volunteering, visit
