Celebrating the work of South Australia's volunteers

Volunteers Minister Tony Piccolo has paid tribute to South Australia's volunteers and the huge contribution they make at this year's annual Volunteers Day Concert at the Adelaide Festival Theatre.

"Whether it is a junior footy coach, a surf lifesaver, a volunteer firefighter or someone who delivers meals to the elderly, these are the people who keep our communities vibrant and strong," Mr Piccolo said.

"While it is estimated that volunteers contribute almost $5 billion a year to our State's economy, you cannot put a price on the difference they make to the lives of people in our community.

"I encourage all South Australians to reflect on this contribution and to consider volunteering themselves."

Mr Piccolo said the State Government is focussed on increasing volunteering and ensuring young people are encouraged to volunteer through opportunities like the Youth Volunteer Scholarship Award program.

"The Youth Volunteer Scholarship Award financially supports young volunteers with up to $3000 to study in their chosen field," Mr Piccolo said.

Applications for the program open on Wednesday and close on Friday, 26 July 2013.

Premier Jay Weatherill was joined by His Excellency, Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RANR to present the 2013 South Australian Volunteer Awards at today's concert which featured performers from the Adelaide Cabaret Festival.

The winners were:

  • The Law Society of South Australia won the Premier's Award for Corporate Social Responsibility for its strong and far reaching support to the community through its provision of affordable legal services.
