Smart living apartments give people with disability more independence

2013-05-23

Innovative South Australian technology that enables people living with disability to lead more independent lives will be on display today when eight 'smart living' apartments are officially opened at The Square in Woodville West.

Disabilities Minister Tony Piccolo said the high-tech apartments use a range of locally developed, cutting-edge technologies that assist people who need 24-hour support.

"These apartments are a major step forward in housing for people with disability, providing tenants with greater control over their environment and lifestyle," Mr Piccolo said.

"The apartments include a call system, environmental controls and communications devices such as smart phones which are all integrated into one system.

"This innovative technology, developed here in South Australia, will allow people living in their own homes to control their environments and communicate with others at the touch of a button.

"It affords people greater dignity and independence by reducing reliance on paid support staff that are required to be in their homes at all times."

Mr Piccolo said tenants will also be able to contact a 24/7 concierge service for additional support. The concierge, located in the apartment complex, will also be able to control the smart system externally.

The development of this cutting-edge technology was achieved through a partnership between the Medical Device Partnering Program at Flinders University and local technology providers Jackson Care Technologies and Clipsal.

Mr Piccolo said the apartments are part of the State Government's Woodville West urban renewal project, The Square.

"The Woodville West renewal project is a great example of the Government's commitment to increasing the supply and diversity of quality affordable housing by fostering diverse, sustainable and inclusive communities," he said.

"The opening of these new apartments is also an excellent example of collaboration between the State Government and private and non-government organisations."
