Increasing the participation of young people, building the capacity of organisations to upskill and retain volunteers and helping more people to enjoy the rewarding experience of giving their time are key focus areas of the state’s new volunteering strategy — launched today.
The Volunteering Strategy for South Australia 2021–27 was announced as part of a National Volunteer Week opening event, which saw hundreds of volunteers take to the streets with a parade through the CBD.
The strategy was developed in consultation with more than 600 people from across local and state government, business and not-for-profit sectors and brings together a shared vision for volunteering in South Australia that we can all work towards over the next six years.
Contribution of volunteers
Volunteers play a vital role in our regions and right across South Australia, contributing significantly to the vibrancy of our state and providing much needed care and support to our community.
This week’s dedication to volunteers is a time to say thank you to our hardworking volunteers and a great way to raise the profile of volunteering in the community — a key aim of the new state strategy.
Created in partnership with Volunteering SA&NT, Business SA, the Local Government Association of South Australia and the State Government, the new strategy builds on the foundation created by the state’s previous strategy (2014–2020).
The strategy aims to:
- build the capacity of volunteer-involving organisations to engage, train, support and retain volunteers, including young volunteers
- promote the benefits of volunteering to encourage greater participation
- support organisations to develop effective practices, structure, governance and training opportunities for volunteers
- foster continuous improvement through partnerships and collaboration between sectors to sustain volunteering.
National Volunteer Week
National Volunteer Week (17 to 23 May 2021) is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteers.
The theme of this year's National Volunteer Week is Recognise. Reconnect. Reimagine.
We are reminded to recognise the vital role volunteers play in our lives, reconnect to what is important in giving our time to help others and ourselves, and reimagine how we can better support volunteers and those they help.
This strategy will play such a key role in ensuring that volunteering remains at the heart of our community.
