-Housing SA takes top national honours for UNO Apartments

Housing SA's UNO Apartments at 102 Waymouth Street has won the 2013 Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) National Award for Excellence in the 'high density housing' category.

At an award ceremony at Melbourne's Crown Palladium last night, UNO Apartments beat a strong field from across the country to claim the prestigious prize.

Social Housing Minister Tony Piccolo said the awards recognised UNO Apartments for its outstanding architectural design, sustainable environmental features, contribution to developing the community and the positive response from the market.

"The UNO Apartments is a 17-storey innovative and sustainable building in the heart of the Adelaide CBD," Mr Piccolo said.

"This building is the first of its kind, a mixed-use development with fully integrated social and private housing.

"UNO Apartments offers a range of housing that has brought together a diverse mix of people into a community.

"The project includes 146 apartments in total, with some allotted to affordable home ownership, affordable private rental, public housing and general market housing.

"Thirty of these apartments are dedicated to youth homelessness service, Youth110.

"The ground floor is made up of three retail tenancies, including a café and sushi bar, giving the building an active street presence, adding vibrancy to the Waymouth St precinct.

"UNO Apartments demonstrate the State Government's commitment to providing exciting, affordable housing opportunities for South Australians."

The UDIA's South Australian Executive Director Terry Walsh applauded the award as "a significant achievement for South Australian development", particularly given the competition from across the country and the exceptionally high calibre of national entrants.

"UNO Apartments presented the judges with a compelling case as it highlights how a judicious mixed use development with appeal to a range of buyers and budgets can transform a location, provide unique features and stimulate the industry," Mr Walsh said.
