Leadership program for regional women

A program that assists regional women to develop and reach their potential as community leaders has been awarded $50,000 in State Government funding.

Minister for Agriculture, Food and Fisheries, Regional Development and the Status of Women Gail Gago said the Ag Excellence Alliance Women in Leadership program was aimed at developing and encouraging women to become leaders and coaches in regional communities.

"Increasing the number of women to actively pursue leadership opportunities in their businesses, communities and industries ultimately helps to produce stronger regional communities," Ms Gago said.

"For many regional women these opportunities can be difficult to come by in comparison to their city counterparts, so programs like this not only encourage women to have the skills and confidence to take on lead roles but ultimately to provide guidance and mentorship to future generations."

A previous participant of the Women in Leadership program Susie Green, Chief Executive Officer of the Apple and Pear Growers of South Australia said the course exceeded her expectations.

"It was a wonderful opportunity to be with a group of highly skilled women from diverse backgrounds that I might not otherwise have got to meet," she said. "It is important for rural women to share experiences and information in a trusted environment and I know I learnt as much from the participants as I did from those who were leading us.

"I'm excited that the State Government is once again supporting this initiative to provide opportunities for other rural and regional women to develop and further their skills in the agricultural industry."

Minister Gago said an important element of the State Government's Premium Food and Wine from Our Clean Environment strategic priority was to develop a competitive and growing agricultural sector through boosting skills and leadership abilities.

The program will use the funding to provide skills and resources to 15 women from across the State, with the initial component aimed at emerging leaders to commence later this year.
