Connecting People to Place
Housing SA's vision, Connecting People to Place, drives the way it delivers services. In July 2014, Housing SA introduced a new model that incorporates this vision through the delivery of services that better responds to the changing needs of customers. It's an investment in long-term, high quality, frontline services to deliver better outcomes for everyone.
The profile of people needing help from Housing SA has changed. They are older, more receive Centrelink benefits as their source of income, and more are single person households. In 2012 to 2013 almost 24,000 people sought help from homelessness services and 36,000 needed help with private rental bonds. This is an increase of almost eight percent from the previous year.
Public housing is targeted to those in the community who are most at risk or vulnerable, who require more services and support to stay in their homes.
Connecting People to Place has three key elements:
- improving access
- a local response.
It's about improving access
Making it easier for people to identify and connect with the services they need. It means people have access to more information about all of their housing options, including emergency accommodation, public or community housing, private rental or affordable home ownership.
It's about placemaking
Placemaking is about connecting people with their local community and services they need to stay in their homes. It's an integrated approach to tenancy management that looks at a person's whole life – not just their housing. Placemaking addresses issues that may cause a person to struggle to stay in their home, including disruption, debt, child safety or mental health issues.
It's about a local response
A local response provides integrated and specialised teams that make best use of staff skills and expertise. A local response means local staff are skilled to help people with the housing choice that best suits their needs. High quality front counter service means people are referred to the most appropriate services. Housing SA staff work closely with local support services to promote inclusion and help people achieve sustainable housing.
Local Participation Program
The Local Participation Program is a new, trial service being offered by Housing SA. A Local Participation Broker can assist tenants and customers who are seeking employment, for example provide support to access volunteering, training, education, and employment opportunities in the local area. We provide a personal and flexible service to help people reach their goals.
The Program is open to customers and tenants who live in the northern (Salisbury or Elizabeth) or north-western (Port Adelaide) parts of Adelaide, and who would like to work or be more active in the community. The one-year pilot program will end in October 2017.
