Tenders sought for $30 million social housing build

The first round of tenders have been called in a $30 million program aimed at delivering 100 new social housing properties on land owned by the South Australian Housing Trust.

Minister for Social Housing Tony Piccolo said the $30 million Social Housing Investment Program will provide new affordable housing opportunities for people on low incomes while stimulating the local building and construction industry.

"Having a safe and affordable home is essential, and this program is about helping some of our most disadvantaged citizen access stable, affordable accommodation," he said.

"Through this program, we aim to deliver 100 new social housing properties, including approximately 19 homes for people with disabilities."

Mr Piccolo said regional communities would benefit from the program, with up to 40 new social housing properties planned across Yorke Peninsula, Eyre Peninsula, Murray Bridge, the Mid North, Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island.

"The construction of these new homes will impact positively on the housing industry, creating more jobs for local people," Mr Piccolo said.

"Over the next few months, Housing SA will conduct a series of selective tender processes covering the construction of these new social housing properties.

"These tender packages will provide opportunities for both smaller and larger building companies to get involved in this construction work."

Mr Piccolo said construction of all houses under the program is scheduled to be completed by the end of next year.

The $30 million Social Housing Investment Program is part of the State Government's broader Affordable Housing Stimulus Package, which will deliver 936 homes and support more than 2,400 jobs over the next 18 months.

Homes to be built in Mansfield Park, Elizabeth Park, Gillies Plains and Gawler West are involved in the first round of tenders.
