A special Zoom webinar featuring guest speakers will be held on Sunday 17 May 2020 to mark IDAHOBIT day.

The day raises awareness of the violence and discrimination against LGBTIQA+ communities worldwide and celebrates LGBTIQA+ people globally, while continuing to raise awareness for the work still needed to be done. Recognised in over 120 countries, this year’s IDAHOBIT international theme is ‘Breaking the Silence’

IDAHOBIT is recognised in over 120 countries. The date marks exactly 30 years since the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from its list of mental health disorders.

Since 2014, the Department of Human Services (DHS) has hosted a free breakfast for the LGBTIQA+ community to celebrate IDAHOBIT. This year DHS has provided funding to the South Australian Rainbow Advocacy Alliance (SARAA) to coordinate the IDAHOBIT event with DHS’ support as co-host and major sponsor.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a community breakfast is not possible, and SARAA has organised a Zoom webinar and a Q&A session with three guest speakers. The speakers are:

• Sarah K Reece — Sarah is a diversity and inclusion specialist and NDIS support coordinator. Sarah is also an artist, writer, accomplished public speaker (TED talk) and has lived experience of mental illness and disability, which Sarah draws upon to enhance support of people living with disabilities.
• Zac Cannell — Zac is a mental health social worker and sexual health counsellor who founded TransMasc SA for trans masculine South Australians. Zac also coordinates the Trans Health SA website, and is a leading advocate for transgender South Australians.
• Neha Madhok — Co-director from Democracy in Colour, Australia’s first national racial justice organisation, Neha is a queer person of colour and was involved in the 2017 marriage equality campaign.

The webinar will close with Jason Tuazon-McCheyne, founder of The Equality Project, who will share information about the Better Together LGBTIQA+ conference to be held in Adelaide in January 2021.
