Student placements are part of the coursework in:
- A University degree;
- Technical and Further Education (TAFE); or
- Registered Training Organisation (RTO) programs.
To complete a student's professional registration, clinical experience may also be needed.
The Department of Human Services (DHS) accommodates student placements and requests for work experience from school-age children in Year 11 or 12 where the request fits with departmental need.
Students help with appropriate activities that contribute to the achievement of their stated learning goals. They are allocated a DHS Manager or Supervisor who provides oversight and directs their work during their time in the department.
While on placement, students must follow the Code of Ethics for the South Australian Public Sector and applicable departmental policies.
Screening checks
Before starting a placement, students must get a National Police Check.
You may also need an employment-related Screening Check undertaken by the DHS Screening Unit. This depends on the area and type of work you will be doing.
You will be advised if this is required after applying for a placement.
Placement enquiries
We are not currently able to accommodate student placements for people studying a Certificate III in Individual Support.
We are only able to consider requests for Social Work and Clinical Psychology placements in our Communities and Family Services Division.
Students interested in undertaking their placement in DHS can complete the DHS Student Placement Enquiry Form
If you experience any issues accessing the form, please email DHSHREnquiries@sa.gov.au
