DHS Community Development Coordinator (CDCs) program and the Kalaya Children’s Centre have launched today the Ngaityu Muiyu Tantu – My Feelings Bag, an initiative aiming to support pre-schoolers children with developing social skills and emotional regulation strategies in language.

Inspired by the Little Fulla Yarns program from Western Australia, Ngaityu Muiya – My feelings in Kaurna targets kids from three to five years of age and offers support for parents to read, yarn and sing with their little ones. The book has been developed in close collaboration with Kayala Children’s Centre staff and local families and communities to become a resource that prompts their own story telling while teaching Kaurna language.

Thanks to the collaboration between the Kalaya Children’s Centre Community Development Coordinators, City of Port Adelaide Enfield Libraries, City of Onkaparinga Libraries, Kaurna Warra Karrpanthi (KWK), DHS Families Growing Together and Parenting SA, the Ngaityu Muiyu Tantu – My Feelings Bag will reach 600 families from the Kalaya and the Taikurrendi Children’s Centres families and potentially other children centres across South Australia later in the year.

The pack includes:

• Ngaityu Muiya – My feelings book in Kaurna Language
• Finger puppets to help with storytelling
• Clapping sticks
• Resources to guide Kaurna pronunciation
• Information about the work of the Aboriginal artist Lawson Dodd’s, and
• Parenting SA and Families Growing Together - Deadly Parenting Handout

Ngaityu Muiya is the fourth release of the series, with the previous ‘My body’, ‘Colours’ and ‘Numbers’ books available for ordering at What's happening - Kalaya Children's Centre (preschools.sa.gov.au)

This initiative has been funded by the Department of Education, City of Port Adelaide Enfield Libraries and City of Onkaparinga Libraries. Kaurna Warra Karrpanthi (KWK) has been consulted on the use of the Kaurna language.
