SA releases response to Disability Royal Commission
South Australia’s initial response to the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability (Disability Royal Commission) has been released today.
The initial response sets out the State Government’s position on 129 recommendations that are South Australia’s responsibility, either individually or in partnership with the Australian Government and other state and territory governments.
Recognising the rights of people with disability
Importantly, the initial response recognises the scale of work needed to achieve the Disability Royal Commission’s vision for a more inclusive Australia where people with disability live free from harm.
It also highlights the work already happening to strengthen disability inclusion, safeguarding and supports in South Australia and nationally.
There was significant engagement with stakeholders and the disability community across South Australia to inform the response.
Next steps
Work is now underway to identify how the Disability Royal Commission recommendations will be implemented in South Australia.
The Department of Human Services (DHS) is committed to engaging people with disability, their families and carers and the disability sector throughout this process with ongoing consultation.
Implementation will progress alongside other disability reform priorities including:
- the independent review of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS Review)
- Australia’s Disability Strategy, and
- the new State Disability Inclusion Plan (under development).
