Specialist autism diagnostic service for at-risk young people

General

A service launched this month is offering free autism assessments for vulnerable clients of the Department of Human Services.

With approximately $800,000 in funding until June 2026, this initiative focuses on young people with exceptional needs, those in at-risk households, or connected with the youth justice system. It marks the first dedicated service of its kind in South Australia.

The new program was announced during ‘World Autism Month’ and is available for Department of Human Services (DHS) clients in Youth Justice, the Exceptional Needs Unit and Safer Family Services.

Through a rigorous tender process, DHS has selected Autism SA, Solasta Wellbeing and Connect Disability Services to deliver this vital service.

How it works

For those diagnosed in any of the three DHS programs, the three organisations will assist in providing appropriate referrals and services, including access to the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Early identification is crucial in accessing effective support and fostering a sense of belonging and identity.

The service will be available state-wide and compliments a recent $330,000 tender for a program targeting students at risk of disengaging from education, with the flexibility to be delivered on school sites.

Access to tailored services is a must

This endeavour reflects our commitment to supporting the autism community, ensuring that those who need it most receive timely assessments and support. We believe that everyone benefits when our community is inclusive and individuals have access to tailored support services.
