Announcing South Australia’s Youth Action Plan and $250,000 to boost essential life skills

General

The Department of Human Services has unveiled South Australia’s Youth Action Plan 2025-2028, a roadmap aimed at providing young South Australians, particularly those facing isolation, disadvantage, and discrimination, with more opportunities to thrive.

A more equitable future for young people

The plan outlines 27 targeted actions which were developed in collaboration with young people and 11 government agencies, focused on improving equity and access across six key areas, including mental health, connection to information, recreation, housing, participation and transitioning to adulthood.

More than 1,000 South Australians, including 854 young people aged 15 to 25, provided their feedback, ensuing the plan reflects their lived experiences and needs.

$250,000 in grants to help young people build key life skills

Consultation on the Youth Action Plan revealed that transitioning to adulthood is challenging for young people and that they are looking for support. In response to this feedback, the Department of Human Services has announced the new Youth Action Plan Life Skills grants. Eligible organisations can apply for up to $15,000 in funding to help young South Australians build essential life skills and transition to adulthood.

This opportunity is open to local councils, Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations, not-for-profits, and social enterprises working with young people across metropolitan and regional South Australia.

The grants will fund eligible organisations to create or expand programs that teach young people essential skills, such as financial literacy, navigating government services (e.g. applying for birth certificates, Medicare cards, Tax File Numbers), learner driver programs, and practical skills including car maintenance, and meal preparation.
