More than food: South Australia invests in dignity and connection

The South Australian Government is investing $2.5 million to help more people across the state access affordable, nutritious food — while building stronger, more connected communities.
With the rising cost of living putting pressure on many families, including those seeking help for the first time, this investment will support the expansion of Social Supermarkets across South Australia.
Social supermarkets
Social Supermarkets are welcoming, retail-style stores offering discounted groceries — no eligibility required. But they’re more than a shop. These spaces connect people to services and support that can help address the root causes of food insecurity.
The Government’s investment, delivered through $500,000 each year until 2029–30, is part of a co-contribution model that encourages collaboration between community organisations, food relief services and government.
Lived-experience summary report
A summary report detailing engagement with over 600 South Australians with lived experience of food insecurity was also shared with the Food Relief Community of Practice on 16 April 2025.
Organisations interested in being part of this work can respond to the current Request for Information via the SA Tenders and Contracts website (DHS056672) by 2pm on 7 May 2025.
