Community sheds get a boost across South Australia

New grants awarded will help build and improve Men’s and Women’s Sheds across the state.
Through the latest Grants SA Community Sheds Round, 35 sheds will share nearly $550,000, with each receiving up to $30,000. Almost 70% of the grants have gone to regional and remote areas, including:
Mimili Men’s Shed – APY Lands
A $30,000 grant will set up a container-based workshop as a meeting place for men of all ages. The Mimili Men’s Group already brings vulnerable youth and senior Elders together for a range of bonding activities such as bush trips, nutritious cooking and leadership succession planning. The sessions also proactively identify men experiencing isolation or at risk of mental health decline. The new shed will give them a safe, permanent space to meet.
Kuju Women’s Shed – Port Lincoln
A $20,000 grant will upgrade the kitchen, safety gear and craft supplies at the Port Lincoln Aboriginal Community Council to create a Women’s Shed program for the local Indigenous community. The new Women’s Shed will be a welcoming and safe place for women to make art, cook healthy food, prepare bush medicines, have a yarn and support each other. It will be one of only a handful of Women’s Sheds in South Australia.
Support for existing sheds
The grants will also revitalise existing Sheds which have become pillars of their communities, such as:
Yankalilla Men’s Shed – Yorke Peninsula
A $28,000 grant will help build a new space with painting and laser equipment. The shed, which recently turned 10, provides a means of social interaction for men of all ages, particularly those suffering from isolation or depression. Members often undertake projects to bring smiles to the wider community, such as building mud kitchens for local schools.
Why sheds matter
Community sheds are safe, welcoming spaces where people can:
- Work on hands-on projects
- Share skills
- Have a chat over a cup of tea
