When Linda* was referred to the Child Wellbeing Program (CWP), she felt trapped in a dangerous domestic violence relationship and feared for the safety of her three children.

Delivered by Safer Family Services on behalf of the Department of Human Services, the CWP supports pregnant women, children, young people and families who are at risk of harm, neglect or family violence.

Referral to the program

Linda was referred to the program following multiple high-risk concerns relating to domestic and family violence, mental health and the emotional wellbeing of her children. Through intensive case management, the program worked with Linda to improve safety and wellbeing for her family and identify a path forward.

What support was offered?

Linda’s practitioner helped her understand patterns of coercive control and domestic violence, giving her the confidence to discuss behaviours she had experienced, including gaslighting and manipulation. Ongoing support empowered Linda to seek crisis accommodation and create a safety plan for herself and her children.

She was supported throughout the crisis period, including assistance with police statements, court attendance to seek a Domestic Abuse Intervention Order, and referrals to specialist domestic violence services. Practical supports such as financial assistance, a new mobile phone and essential household items helped Linda establish a safer home.

The outcomes were lifechanging

Linda’s mother, Sadie*, said the program had transformed her daughter’s life.

“The program has made a profound difference to my daughter and her children. The staff treated our family with dignity, understanding, and patience,” she said.

Sadie said the support and safety planning helped Linda find the strength to leave a domestic violence relationship and begin rebuilding her life in a safer environment.

“The way they listened without judgment and provided clear options and resources helped my daughter feel supported and empowered at a time when she felt overwhelmed and frightened.”

Importantly, after the intensive intervention ended, Linda’s family was connected with ongoing support to maintain their safety and build a positive future.

“My daughter and her children are now safe and have the opportunity to move forward with hope and stability. The impact of your work cannot be overstated,” Sadie said.

“You truly change lives, and our family will always be grateful for the role you played in helping them find safety and a new beginning. My daughter is thriving, as are the children.”
