New MAYFS Youth Leadership Group kicks off to help create positive change

Deadly Diversion Leaders with Aunty Alison Fielding and MAYFS staff

A new group of young leaders is making its mark. DHS’s Metropolitan Aboriginal Youth and Family Services (MAYFS) has officially launched its Youth Leadership Group, proudly named by the young people themselves as the Deadly Diversion Leaders. The name reflects their confidence, positivity, and readiness to step up and lead.

The group’s first gathering focused on building connections and setting the tone for their leadership journey. A special highlight was meeting respected Elder Aunty Alison Fielding, who welcomed the group and shared words of encouragement, wisdom, and belief in their potential as future leaders.

The Deadly Diversion Leaders also took part in fun, interactive activities designed to build trust, teamwork, and a sense of purpose. It was clear from the start that these young people are eager to have a say, support one another, and contribute to positive change for their peers and community.

The group will meet regularly, working alongside MAYFS staff to explore youth diversion, leadership, and new ideas that support young people to stay connected, confident, and on strong pathways.

MAYFS is a dedicated Aboriginal service focused on helping young people thrive – helping them stay engaged in school, training and work, participate in community activities like sport, music, arts and culture, build healthy relationships, and avoid crime and risky behaviours.
