Young MAYFS participants showing initiative and giving back to community

MAYFS mentoring helps young people thrive — supporting them to build confidence, discover new skills, and take pride in their achievements.

Through guidance, hands-on experiences, and encouragement, participants often see real changes in themselves. Many are inspired to take initiative and give back to their communities, showing how personal growth can create positive ripple effects.

Two motivated participants of MAYFS (Metropolitan Aboriginal Youth and Family Services), aged 12 and 13, recently put this into practice. On their own initiative, they decided to give back and help out an older local community member by tidying up their front yard, mowing the lawn, and whipper-snipping the edges.

Wanting to do this properly, they asked the MAYFS team for support with equipment and guidance. A staff member met them on-site with a mower and whipper snipper, ensuring they worked safely, wore the right protective gear and stayed hydrated.

The young people set to work and completed the job to an impressive standard, earning heartfelt praise from the community member. The experience left them feeling proud, confident, and motivated to continue contributing to their community.

A great example of how powerful mentoring can be and what a positive difference it can make to the lives of young people as well as the communities around them.
