About the Adult Safeguarding Unit

The Adult Safeguarding Unit (ASU) offers free, confidential information, advice and support to protect the rights of adults at risk of abuse, including older people.

What is safeguarding?

Safeguarding is the action that a person, organisation or community takes to promote and protect the health, wellbeing and human rights of a vulnerable adult to live free from abuse or mistreatment.

Everyone should understand and support the rights of adults.

Key functions of the Adult Safeguarding Unit (ASU)

We support the rights of vulnerable adults by:

  • Supporting the community with information, guidance and resources to help safeguard adults.
  • Giving confidential advice to people worried about themselves or others.
  • Responding to reports of suspected or actual abuse.
  • Providing tailored safeguarding support to adults experiencing abuse.
  • Raising community awareness about our services and how to protect vulnerable adults.

Adult Safeguarding Charter of Rights and Freedoms

The Adult Safeguarding Unit is guided by, and committed to upholding, the rights and freedoms outlined in the Statement on the Rights and Freedoms.

These rights are grounded in fundamental human rights principles, which remain constant even as an individual’s needs and circumstances change.

We respond to concerns of abuse or mistreatment in accordance with the Ageing and Adult Safeguarding Act 1995.
