DHS recognised at inaugural SA Child Protection Awards

2021-09-08

Dedicated volunteers from the Department of Human Services’ Lived Experience Network have jointly won the inaugural SA Child Protection Volunteer of the Year Award. This volunteer group contributes their diverse experiences as parents and carers to inform and shape key reforms to support families and prevent children entering care.

Congratulations to all the network members, including Shelly Coad, Mirja Severe, Mona Shirzadkhan, Wei Gao, Chloe Cameron, Jasmine Brouwers, Lemy Neisha, Elisha Hoffmann, Luke Buttigieg, Stacey Ugur, Jamie Schmidt, Sara Weeding, Kirsten Abel, Belinda Valentine and Steve Harvey.

Delivered by the Department for Child Protection (DCP) in partnership with the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN), the SA Child Protection Awards celebrates the achievements of DCP partners who provide vital support to vulnerable children and young people and inspire others to support children and young people in care. The inaugural awards were presented at the SA Child Protection Awards Breakfast on Wednesday 8 September 2021, held during National Child Protection Week (5–11 September 2021).

The Lived Experience Network was not the only winner from DHS, with Executive Director of Community and Family Services Ann-Marie Hayes recognised for her partnership and collaboration to transform early help and support services for families to prevent children from coming into care. She was named as inaugural winner of the "Supporting families to stay together" award.

DHS’s ‘Adults Supporting Kids’ or ASK website was also nominated as a finalist in the "Innovation in child protection: Metropolitan" category.

Congratulations to all the award nominees and winners for their outstanding work to improve the lives of families, children and young people in SA.
