Information service to help South Australians live independently

An information service that provides practical advice and product information to help South Australians live independently will be delivered by local not-for-profit organisation Catalyst Foundation from 1 July 2021.

The Department of Human Services (DHS) has collaborated with Catalyst to give fresh life to the long-running Independent Living Centre (ILC), which has provided public education on daily living equipment, technology and techniques since 1978.

New online information hub

In addition to running the 1300 885 886 information phone line, Catalyst will launch a new online information hub, making it easier than ever for people to access the latest news and advice.

Executive Director of Disability Services at DHS, Joe Young, said Catalyst will be able to refer callers and website visitors to other suitable support services and link them to local providers across the state.

“South Australians with disability, injury, illness or who are ageing will continue to access the same quality information and helpful advice from the information line, with the added benefit of better links to other support services and referrals to providers in their local area,” Mr Young said.

“The independent living sector has evolved a lot since the ILC was established more than 50 years ago, when South Australians had few services and providers to choose from and online resources did not exist.

“As an experienced local not-for-profit organisation, Catalyst is well-placed to provide information on contemporary equipment, technology and techniques to assist with everyday tasks and information on how to access the support and services through the NDIS, My Aged Care or privately through its directory of services.

“Carers and professional support providers, including allied health professionals and students, will also be able to source trustworthy information including handy fact sheets.”

Catalyst has extensive experience in providing information to those who are older, vulnerable and living with disability, including delivery of the Senior’s Information Service and a digital literacy program.

Catalyst Foundation Chief Executive Jenny Hughes says the organisation has worked with South Australians for more than 26 years as a leading provider of free and independent community information.

“Catalyst is passionate about helping people gain knowledge and confidence to access products and services to support them to live independently,” Ms Hughes said.

“South Australians living with disability or who are ageing, together with organisations who engage or work in the aged care and disability sectors, will benefit from the Independent Living Centre’s information line being delivered in conjunction with Catalyst’s many related services.”

The information line remains open

The 1300 885 886 information line remains open Monday to Friday, 9.00 am to 4.00 pm.

Catalyst will begin running the service from 1 July 2021.
