Shining the spotlight on our state’s deserving volunteers

2021-04-12

More than 1,000 volunteers will be treated to a free performance by Adelaide Cabaret Festival stars when the annual South Australian Volunteers Day Thank You event returns in June, following a COVID-19 hiatus last year.

All South Australian volunteers are invited to register for this in-person afternoon of recognition and entertainment.

This year’s event marks 19 years of formally acknowledging the many and varied ways that volunteers dedicate their time, skills and passion - from helping in emergencies and patrolling beaches, to delivering food and providing companionship to the elderly and isolated.

Volunteers will be welcomed to the newly renovated Her Majesty’s Theatre, continuing a long-standing partnership with the Adelaide Festival Centre, which has provided the venue and Adelaide Cabaret Festival performers for the event since 2006.

Held annually on Volunteers Day, this year’s event falls on Monday 14 June, coinciding with the Queen’s Birthday public holiday.

The event will be hosted by ABC’s Gardening Australia presenter Sophie Thomson together with student Volunteer Ambassador, and host of the 2020 online Volunteer Thank You event, Keagan Wallace.

Attendees will enjoy live performances by Adelaide Cabaret Festival artists including beloved Adelaide icon Willsy in partnership with Bob Downe, Adelaide local and Cabaret Festival regular Michael Griffiths and New York-based performer Amber Martin.

The event will also present the prestigious South Australian Volunteer Awards, which commend those who inspire and promote the spirit of volunteering in the following categories:

  • The Joy Noble Medal, South Australia’s highest distinction for an individual volunteer
  • The Excellence in Volunteer Management Award. Offered in partnership with Volunteering SA&NT, this award recognises the dedication and commitment of volunteer managers who support and facilitate the engagement of volunteers
  • ‘The Andamooka’ Community Project Award. Awarded to a community, or group of volunteers, which has undertaken a community project resulting in significant community benefit
  • The Premier’s Award for Corporate Social Responsibility. This award recognises the strong contribution the business sector makes to our communities such as through philanthropy, partnerships or releasing employees for volunteer service.

South Australia boasts a 900,000-strong contingent of people who volunteer either formally or informally.
