A token of appreciation for SA volunteers

General

Hundreds of volunteers across the state have been acknowledged for their selfless efforts, as part of the State Government’s volunteer recognition program.

The South Australian Volunteer Certificate of Recognition offers organisations a free opportunity to acknowledge the significant contribution of their volunteers throughout the year until 30 November.

In 2023, more than 1400 certificates were issued across 12 sectors, from animal welfare and emergency services, through to heritage preservation and sports.

The Pichi Richi Railway, located in Quorn, was one of the many organisations to award the certificates to its volunteers, with 387 certificates in total distributed this year.

Volunteer Jarrod Smythe, 22, is Locomotive Superintendent at the railway and has been involved in its operations for the past 13 years.

The passion for volunteering came from his family, which has contributed to steam preservation in SA for the better part of 45 years.

Along with several hundred other volunteers, the railway continues to be proudly restored and run by people like Jarrod, who are passionate about its history and unique offering.

The 5th of December is International Volunteer Day, which shines a light on the important role that volunteers play in responding to challenges facing the world.
