Relationships and marriage

Right to marry

The right to marry under Australian law is not determined by sex or gender identity. Same-sex marriage is legal in Australia.

Relationships register

The Relationships Register allows couples to register their relationship and have their status as a couple formally and legally recognised.

It means people have a clear avenue to have their relationship legally recognised, and also makes the process of accessing entitlements and asserting rights, including in medical situations, far simpler.
