Island Welcome Curated by Belinda Newick, delves into contemporary jewelry as a powerful expression of welcome, drawing inspiration from the tradition of islander garlands or leis. The artists, including South Australians Jess Dare, Kath Inglis, and Lauren Simeoni, skillfully utilize diverse materials such as used thongs, seaweed, fabric sausage links, shells, clay, paper, porcelain, and streak wire.
Through their innovative creations, these artists bring attention to asylum seeker issues, prompting a thoughtful exploration of who gets to extend a welcome and why.
South Australian artist Kath Inglis will speak to her prolific arts practice and the materiality of Island Welcome with Lauren Simeoni speaking to materials used in this exhibition that will be explored in a workshop following the artist talk.
