The CYP LEAN provides a platform for children and young people aged 15 to 25 years with experience of domestic, family and/or sexual violence (DFSV) to share their knowledge and experiences.
The CYP LEAN is a safe and supported way for young people to help shape DFSV policies, practice, services and systems in South Australia.
The CYP LEAN currently engages young people aged 15 to 25 years and will explore opportunities to strengthen participation by younger children in future phases of the CYP LEAN.
How the CYP LEAN works
Young people helped design how the CYP LEAN operates to ensure there are different ways to get involved. The CYP LEAN is made up of three groups: General Membership, Youth System Advisors and Youth Directors.
General Membership
General Members are staff in organisations that provide services and programs to support young people aged 15 to 25 years with lived experience of DFSV. Their role is to:
- share participation opportunities with young people they support
- help young people learn about DFSV reform activities
- provide support and guidance to young people who choose to participate (Youth System Advisors).
Youth System Advisors
Youth System Advisors are young people aged 15 to 25 years who contribute their voices, views and experiences to DFSV reform projects and activities. Their role is to:
- help inform DFSV reform projects by sharing what works, what doesn't, and what needs to change for young people.
- participate in surveys, interviews and conversations, focus groups, workshops and other consultation and engagement activities.
Youth Directors
Youth Directors are a small group of young people aged 15 to 25 years who help guide the CYP LEAN. They will work alongside the Office of Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence and will help:
- shape how the CYP LEAN engages with young people
- co-create youth-friendly communications
- provide advice on how the CYP LEAN operates
- support the CYP LEAN to grow and improve over time
- ensure the CYP LEAN remains responsive to the needs, experiences and preferences of young people with lived experience of DFSV.
How young people’s ideas are shared
Finding opportunities
The Office of Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence works with government departments to identify opportunities for young people to share their advice and ideas.
These opportunities support the delivery of the Building Safer Futures: 5-Year Implementation Plan and the accepted recommendations of the Royal Commission into Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence
Sharing opportunities
The Office of Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence shares these opportunities with the General Membership.
Supporting participation
The General Membership works alongside the Office of Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence to invite and support young people to participate.
Sharing young people’s views
Young people’s advice and ideas are shared with the government departments responsible for projects that are improving systems and services.
Providing feedback
Project teams provide feedback back to the young people about how their advice and ideas shaped the project and made a difference.
