Our strategy

The Child and Family Support System (CFSS) aims to support children and families by providing additional and targeted support. This support includes supporting families with multiple and complex life challenges to reduce the incidence of child abuse and neglect and prevent children entering the child protection system.

Our strategy is guided by our Roadmap, the National Framework and Closing the Gap.

The Roadmap for Reforming the Child and Family Support System (2021–2023) was developed in 2021. It outlined strategies to create and implement a new connected, evidence-informed service system that works with families earlier and more effectively.

We continue to be guided by the strategies set out in the Roadmap. When a new strategic document is released, it will be published here.

National Framework for Protecting Australia’s Children 2021–31

Safe and Supported: the National Framework for Protecting Australia’s Children 2021-31 sets out how all Australian governments, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders and the non-government sector will work together to help children, young people and families in need of support.

Safe and Supported: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander First Action Plan 2023–2026

Safe and Supported: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander First Action Plan 2023-2026 focuses on achieving safety and wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

Closing the Gap

Closing the Gap commits all Australian governments to being accountable, culturally safe and responsive to the needs of Aboriginal peoples.

The CFSS contributes to Closing the Gap in several ways, including by:

  • providing services to keep children safe in culture with their family
  • investing in Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations
  • improving the evidence-base for culturally safe systems and services.
