Our healing approach

At the heart of the Child and Family Support System (CFSS) is a healing approach. Children and families, practitioners, organisations and funders are working together to create a system that supports healing and prevents further traumatisation. This means everyone involved in the system works together to get better at responding to trauma, wherever it is present.

A healing approach helps us build strong connections with children and families and supports them to stay engaged with our services for as long as they need. Our healing approach is guided by the:

  • Aboriginal System Design Criteria and Co-Design Principles
  • Trauma Responsive System Framework.

The voices of the Lived Experience Network have been critical in the development of a trauma responsive and healing system.

Our ongoing commitments to building a trauma responsive and healing system

To build a trauma responsive and healing system, we are making, and will continue to make commitments as individuals and organisations:

  • We must deeply listen and give status to the voices of the children and families that are most affected by this system and often have the least control and power in it
  • We commit to truth-telling about the impacts of colonisation.

Aboriginal System Design Criteria and Co-design Principles

Aboriginal System Design Criteria and Co-Design Principles were developed as part of the state-wide co-design process to inform approaches and priorities to design the CFSS.

In considering the design of the whole system with an Aboriginal lens, our Design Criteria is a system:

  • where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are front and centre
  • that is family-focused
  • that reflects Aboriginal cultural strengths
  • that reflects Aboriginal right to self-determination
  • that reflects the truth of our shared histories, the hurts, the strengths and the healing.

Trauma Responsive System Framework

The Trauma Responsive System Framework outlines a system-wide approach to building trauma responsive capacity. The framework is designed to encourage people to consider what actions can be taken to build a trauma responsive system across each level of the CFSS.
